North East Alpacas is a full time family run business nestled in the rural farming community of Whately, Massachusetts. We share our 20 acre farm with two dogs, a certified organic vegetable farm, abundant wildlife and our herd of exceptional Huacaya alpacas.
Our story began in 1999. The Beaudry brothers were weary after twelve hectic years in the fast food industry combined with their full time jobs. After reading an article in the newspaper about Alpacas, they decided a lifestyle change was needed and began to research the industry. Spending the next two years doing their homework, Michael and Howard made their initial purchase of five breeding females in 2001. The animals were boarded at a local farm for the next three years while they learned the ropes. They became the poo crew for a herd of over one hundred alpacas. Their apprenticeship administering shots, trimming nails and assisting in the breeding and birthing process for a herd that large proved to be an invaluable experience. They felt confident to cut the cord and take the next step towards building their farm.
After purchasing twenty-one acres of land in Whately, Michael and Howard along with their wives, Marion and Lisa began building their homes on the property. Motivated by the lifestyle change as well as their love of the animals, the dream was about to become a reality. With their homes completed, pastures planted, fencing up and the tobacco barn on the property renovated, the animals and families moved to their new homes in September 2004.
Since our initial purchase, our herd has increased, we've taken on boarders, we've built three new barns designed specifically for alpacas, our water, hay and pastures have been tested (with excellent results) so, North East Alpacas is up and running!
We welcome visits to our farm year round and will arrange for lodging if needed. All lodging fees will be deducted from the purchase price of one of our animal packages. We encourage prospective buyers to visit and take advantage of our hands on philosophy. North East Alpacas is large enough to offer quality animal selection but small enough to offer personal customer support before, during and after a purchase. |
